Botanica: Under the sea and into the jungle

This year’s FDSA Spring Show, Botanica, was a vibrant celebration of nature’s beauty—taking the audience on a journey from the depths of the ocean to the heart of the jungle. The theme encouraged designers to explore the richness of the natural world, and for my look, I drew inspiration from a tropical waterfall—a place I associate with complete peace and relaxation. I envisioned something that felt lighthearted and free, playful without a single worry, much like the way water dances over rocks and sunlight filters through leaves. My design aimed to reflect that joyful spirit, channeling the calming, colorful, and organic energy of nature into a look that felt both fun and freeing.

For the design process, I was especially inspired by Sabrina Carpenter’s tour costumes and the playful, carefree energy she brings to the stage. I wanted to channel that same spirit—showing that fashion and performance can be a form of fun and self-expression. I chose a babydoll-style top paired with a frilly set of shorts, a silhouette that felt both youthful and fluid. The look was inspired by the image of a tropical waterfall: the shorts and ruffled hem of the top representing the water cascading down, while the foam and spray at the bottom came to life through layers of tulle and carefully hand-attached pearls. The movement of the ruffles and the puffed-out shape echoed the way water flows freely and unpredictably. Every element was chosen to bring that vision of nature’s playfulness into a look that felt light, joyful, and alive.
