FDSA Spring 24: Tales and Tropes
The FDSA SS 24 Fashion show was themed "Tales and Tropes", an exploration of classic fairytale stories. For this project, I was inspired by the trope of transformation: going from one being to another. I portrayed this transformation of going from one world to another with the form of a mermaid going from sea to land. In my other design, I focused on the transformation from good to evil, inspired by the black swan.
To start the mermaid inspired dress, I created a paper bodice, molded to a mannequin's shape. Then, in a swirl pattern, I attached strings of pearls. I added a mesh mterial to the back of the bodice for support as well as decorative strings of pearls. Lastly, for the bodice, i added mosaic tiles to the edges to outline the shape. This outfit also has a high-low skirt that was made from old curtains. A scalloped edge was put in place to reference shells, as well with lines on the skirt made from the mosaic tiles and shell mix. the sleeves were made in a similar fashion to match the skirt. Strings of different kinds of shells were used as accessories for this look.
To start the swan inspired dress, I did a lot of research on transformation dresses, and decided to use the method that Cinderella uses in live shows. To begin, I made a simple, tube style black dress out of a stretchy fabric, then added two layers of tulle, one black and one white (mostly for my own organization). Then, hours were spent individually gluing black craft feathers to one side of the black tulle. Then the dress was turned inside out and white craft feathers were glued on the white tulle in the opposite direction. For the show, the black skirt will be rolled up and help up by the white skirt, which is held up by a simple white corset with Velcro in the center. A mural was painted on the back of the corset to depict the transformation in pictures. More decorative feathers were added, the reveal was tested multiple times, weights were added to the skirt, then it was done.
